Shockingly, those with some of the highest levels of harmful chemicals found in their systems are firefighters. When they enter structure fires, they’re exposed to burning chemicals emanating out of everything from computers and TVs to vinyl shower curtains. It’s an unsettling thought, and the truth is those chemicals have been there all along, in the places we work and live. No one knows exactly how many chemicals we’re exposed to each day, or what all of the long-term effects of exposure to them could be. But there’s good news. Sauna therapy has shown promising detoxifying results—better, in fact, than traditional medical treatments. In other words, sweating lets our bodies naturally detoxify themselves. In this final installment of our three-part series, toxic chemical expert Bruce Lourie sums up why chemical avoidance is important, and even more essential is to actively work to get existing chemicals out of our bodies, and the best way to do that is a routine that includes lots and lots of sweat.
